Listen first.
Start with the person, not a preset task. Respect their interests, preferences, and right to say no.
About us
We’re building a bridge between generations, one thoughtful interaction at a time.
Cross the Bridge is a student-led community initiative in development in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Our purpose is to help older adults feel valued, supported, and less isolated, while giving young people meaningful ways to listen, learn, and contribute.
The idea is simple: a useful skill, a good question, or a shared creative activity can open a conversation. The best connections leave room for both people to teach and both people to learn.
We're shaping three possible areas of activity: technology guidance, shared storytelling, and arts and crafts. Each starts with the interests and comfort of the people taking part.
What matters to us
Start with the person, not a preset task. Respect their interests, preferences, and right to say no.
Make room for different experiences. Connection is a shared exchange, not a one-way act of helping.
Small interactions count. Patience and attention matter more than rushing through an activity.
Work within the guidance, permissions, and supervision that a safe community setting requires.
Where we are today
We're at the early development stage: exploring activities, seeking advice, and learning what appropriate supervised opportunities could look like.
There are no confirmed visits or open group placements listed here. We’ll share specific participation details when suitable arrangements are in place.
If you’re an educator, a senior-community staff member, or an experienced volunteer coordinator, your perspective could help shape the next step.

The commitments guiding any future activities.
Follow the host organization’s requirements, including orientation, supervision, and any required permissions before participating.
Participation should be voluntary. Ask before helping with a device, writing down a story, or starting an activity, and respect a change of mind.
Do not ask for passwords, payment details, or private medical information. Photos, recordings, and sharing someone’s story need clear permission and must follow the host’s rules.
These are proposed social and creative activities, not clinical care. Refer personal-care, health, and safety concerns to responsible staff.
Experience, questions, and thoughtful ideas are welcome.
